People often ask me if I get treated differently when I’m read as male versus when I used to be read as female. Hmmmmaybe. Really, there are too many subtle wavelengths to any human interaction to know which are directly connected to how people are reading my gender.

But there is one stark and tangible difference in how the world responds to me, and that’s the types of things that men (specifically cis-gendered straight men) talk to me about.

Men say horrifying and revolting things to you about women when they think you’ve never been one.

The thing about this article is this; I can't really think of any such comments made to me about women since perhaps when I was going through puberty.

The article is not about men, it is about the company kept, and a taxi driver is not company kept.

You hear shit when people don't realize you're part of a group, or used to be.

My black or Asian Jewish friends hear anti-Semitic crap all the time that people will say because they don't 'look Jewish'.

Woman I used to work with was witness to an amazing rant about black students in our district and 'political correctness' because the bigot speaking didn't realize she was black.

I do have to say though that most men who say shit like the above don't actually tone it down much in the presence of ladies.

I tried and tried, but couldn't resist commenting on each item in the linked article individually.

1. "What's that b**** doing begging? Doesn't she know she can sell her p****?"

This was said to me by a cab driver at 4 am taking me to the airport in New Orleans.

A cabbie, eh? I've never tried driving a cab, but it kinda sounds like a soul crushing job. Not that I'm making excuses for the d***head. I'm just explaining why I'm not surprised.

2. "What's black and blue and doesn't like sex? The eight-year-old girl in my trunk."

This was a "joke" somebody told me a few weekends ago while we were rock climbing.

Wtf?!

No, really. Wtf?! Does anyone actually know a guy who'd say that? Please don't raise your hands all at once.

I consider myself to have a twisted, callous sense of humor. But even I know better than to say s*** like that. Come on!

3. "That b**** ________________________."

The above sentence can be finished or reorganized in any number of common ways.

"That b*** is stupid."

"That b****'s mouth would look a lot better on my d***."

"Don't listen to her, she's just a b****."

All of those are things people have actually been said to me.

Okay, I gotta admit this is culturally ingrained to a point. But it ultimately comes down to the kind of company you keep. I know, its a fortune-cookie answer. But that doesn't mean its bulls***.

Try not to judge someone too much for using that or any other epithet when they're emotional. People can say all kinds of f***ed-up things when the fur is flying that they otherwise wouldn't even consider saying.

But definitely do judge those who'd say such things under more casual circumstances. Because they're mean-spirited subhuman-trash.
